Shanghai Transportation - FAQ 1
May 16th 2006 09:25
Argh! I’m in Shanghai! What’s the first thing to do?
Head to the closest Metro station to get yourself one of these:
What’s the best way to get around?
The most convenient choice would be to take the Metro. You can see metro signs almost everywhere in Shanghai and there are now 5 metro lines with another 4 under construction. Station names are announced in English and clear signs indicating the stops are hung everywhere. The tickets cost from 3 – 10 Yuan depending on whether you need to change lines. There are ticket vending machines but they usually only take coins so make sure you’re carrying plenty of them if you don’t have a Jiao Tong card. The real con to this mode of transport is the large number of people using the service during rush hour – it would be advisable to master the art of human bulldozing or just conspicuously carry a cactus.
What if I’m scared of subways? Those dark tunnels look so menacing!
If your hotel is relatively further away from a Metro station, hailing a taxi would be a better pick. This was my most common choice of transport during my stay. Taxis are cheap in Shanghai, with a starting fee of 10 Yuan for the first 3 km. For the first time traveler with the language barrier however, it is advisable to use the taxis for more major destinations/attractions as it’s possible to be ripped off should the taxi be operated by an independent company (taxis colored dark red) instead of reliable major ones like Da Zhong (it’s easy to spot the Da Zhong taxis as they’re colored cyan). Don’t be afraid to speak up and use the meter or demand a receipt, and always have your destination in Chinese with you on a slip of paper. (Cont. next post)

on the other hand, the subway is a breeze, if it's not rush hour!
